WINNERS OF THE KEN ORR MEMORIAL SHIELD 10 YEARS STRAIGHT
Presidents Report
Week Ending 6-7-08
Once again we hold the Ken Orr shield high. For the tenth straight year!!! . Each year Coffs come out
firing and provide our boys with some, exciting and intense footy, well done lads. For those wishing to
take a look at the coveted shield it will be proudly displayed at the Coffs Harbour Catholic Club. Last
week we were asked to attend a meeting with the group management, referees appointment board and
referee Kirt Taylor. The meeting was called in answer to a letter which we sent regarding the quality of
the refereeing at two of our recent matches. It was pleasing to the invited and to be able to voice our
concerns and opinions and also for Darryl and me to gain some surprising knowledge of how the
referees selection occurs each week. Both Darryl and I are confident that following the meeting all
concerned had a much better understanding of the expectations asked of the referees each time they
take the field. Those present at the meeting had the opportunity to discuss in detail the reasoning
behind some decisions. All in all a very positive meeting, we will have to wait and see how much sunk in.
Thanks to Darryl for his professional and passionate input into the letter forwarded to the group
management.
Games
U|18 - Congratulations to our U/18 boys with a convincing win over Coffs 52-8. The score line does not
reflect the courage that Coffs displayed as they were undermanned on the day. It was a good
opportunity for our boys to consolidate the plays Warren and Jeff have been working on at training.
Congratulations to Jason McGrady Jnr and Dave McGrady on playing with the Combined High schools
winning touch side. Jason was chosen player of the tournament and both boys were selected to play for

Reserve Grade- The first half of the reserve grade game against Coffs provided us with some good
football as is always the case when we play Coffs. Unfortunately the second half saw Coffs take control
and the lead in the game until with about 8 minutes remaining the referee abandoned the game. We had
3 in the sin bin with no caution and trailing 22-6 when the official decided that our reggies were playing
“not in the spirit of the game and was concerned for the safety of the Coffs Harbour players”. Those who
know the players from the both sides would be shocked that we were reprimanded for playing hard
footy. Coffs officials are as confused as we are with his decision.

First Grade- Each year the battle for the Ken Orr shield sees both clubs primed for some really hard
football, last Sunday was typical as it is when our two clubs meet. The fact that we had held the shield for
9 consecutive years we saw Coffs to come out firing. At first glance it seemed to be evenly matched with
both sides scoring try for try. But in the second half it was clear to see that we still had another gear.
Well done to Coffs for a great game and due to the outcome of Sawtell and Bello games still have a
chance to make the top five. Our boys are in the lead on the table and with next week’s game against
Bello need to keep up the good work.
